HAWC opened the doors to its new handicap accessible emergency shelter for individuals and families fleeing their homes because of domestic violence.
With the current economic climate, shortages of jobs and affordable housing mean that HAWC clients and their children are staying in shelter longer than usual. In a state with a shortage of emergency shelter beds, demand for shelter far exceeds capacity.
While work on the home is completed, the fundraising effort to pay for the purchase and renovations continues. HAWC has reached the half-way mark in raising the funds necessary to purchase and renovate the shelter.
